Here is an interesting possibility – Ensemble Studios, the people behind the Age of Empires series are looking to recruit people for a new MMORPG. A spin-off of the AoE series or something new altogether? I can’t wait to find out.
Age of Empires (particularly Age of Empires II) rocked. And I mean really rocked. It was one hell of game. They tried to continue the success with Age of Mythology but what was just doomed to failure as I have previously said and my thoughts were confirmed when they came crawling back to the idea of Age of Empires III.
The above mentioned title should be out later this year and the graphics look great but back on topic, they have been posting job advertisements recently that could only really be posted by a company that wants to build a MMORPG.
This is exciting because they could be doing it AoE style, building a huge kingdom and battling other players. Some of you may know that this idea was adopted around five years ago or so when Games Workshop first began planning a massive game named Warhammer Online.
They released screenshots in their magazine White Dwarf of Empire soldiers fighting a line or orcs. I think I still have the issue somewhere. The idea was each player was a lord with his own castle and miniature empire, etc if my memory serves.
It looked a great game but due to the technical details that needed to be hammered out they eventually changed it to a more traditional MMORPG and then in summer 2004 when it was due to come out, they announced they had abandoned the project (Climax, the developer later said they were going it alone but that’s a different story. Rumour has it Games Workshop pulled out because they were, and still are, going broke).
This left a gap in the market. There were obvious problems with the initial idea such as how big is the place if each person needs their own bit of land, etc as it’s not easy to just set up new realms instantly when they fill up but if someone could work round the details it would produce a fantastic new game. I’m hoping that, that someone could be Ensemble Studios.
